CLAIM Vision for the Future

CLAIM promotes a positive vision for the future of Grass Valley in lieu of the reopening of the Idaho Maryland Mine and associated waste rock processing projects.

Promote Sustainability - Promote businesses and life styles that don’t deplete our resources. We seek to build our community in ways that preserve the environment and don’t pollute.

Follow the General Plan - A lot of thought and public input went into creating the General Plan. It is the official guiding document for development in Grass Valley, providing for intelligent and consistent land usage. Major deviations from this plan should only be considered during complete General Plan revisions.

Protect the Local Economy – Protect and preserve the aesthetic appeal of Grass Valley in order to continue to draw tourism and clean high-tech businesses. Our appeal depends upon visual beauty, clean air, reasonable traffic, peaceful nights, and outdoor recreational opportunities. We should avoid boom and bust industries and look for steady growth with a future, providing jobs for locals and stable housing.

Keep Our Town Safe – Avoid introducing hazards to the community and avoid creating problems for future generations to solve.  The legacies of toxic mine waste and other polluting industries of the past illustrate the importance of following the precautionary principle and protecting our children’s future.

Create a Clean Jobs Magnet –Pro-active support for an aesthetically pleasing, walk-able, friendly community will in turn attract healthy businesses, promote sustainable growth, provide opportunities for 21st century jobs, and enrich our community.

The proposed heavy industrial Idaho-Maryland Mine and Ceramics Factory project does not meet ANY of these objectives and is in fact in direct contradiction to all of them.
